FOR hundreds of years few people knew what lurked beneath the surface here. The square or rectangular dwellings are sunk into the ground, whose temperature inside is over 10 degrees Celsius in winter and 20 degrees Celsius in summer. Statistics show that there are still over 3 thousand people living in cave dwellings while others have moved to storied houses. What this photograph reveals is a village in China that existed for hundreds of years and home to about six generations of people — deep beneath the surface of the earth.

There are actually many reasons why a city has to be abandoned. War, natural disasters, climate change and the loss of important trading partners to name a few. Whatever the cause, these lost cities were forgotten in time until they were rediscovered centuries later. Located in present-day Tunisia, Carthage was founded by Phoenician colonists and became a major power in the Mediterranean. The city was destroyed by the Romans in BC.

Since , the Forbidden City has been under the charge of the Palace Museum, whose extensive collection of artwork and artifacts were built upon the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Local legends often tell of cities or islands that have been lost to the waves. Nowadays we are sceptical of these tales, but some of them really happened.
